For the Year of Poland in France (2004), the Musée du Louvre exhibited 18 paintings of Warsaw by Bernardo Bellotto in the 18th century. This series of “Views of Warsaw” – all of which are reproduced in large format in the book – is incomparable in terms of its iconographical, historical and aesthetic interest. The paintings provide such an accurate picture that they were used at the end of World War II to help rebuild the city center. Some paintings are shown opposite pictures of the city taken before and after the bombings.
