Like every one in his generation, Delacroix was confronted with the new medium of photography, and his opinions on the matter ranged from doubt to experimentation and finally renunciation.
This richly illustrated book takes a detailed look at all the aspects of this complex question, which has already given rise to various interpretations, and shows the interest of exploring it in the artist’s own studio. The book mainly consists of pictures of male and female nudes who posed and were photographed for Delacroix, shown with the drawings that he executed either at the same time or based on the photographs. In parallel, it examines Delacroix’s difficult relationship with his photographed image. Although he had reservations about getting his picture taken, there nevertheless exist some rare daguerreotypes with an incredible presence.
