Princess Marie d’Orléans was a romantic artist revealing of the tastes and aspirations of her time. Introduced to drawing at an early age, she found her mode of expression in sculpture when she was 19, drawing influence from Ary Scheffer, her teacher, intellectual guide and artistic adviser. The few works of Marie d’Orléans are either religious or of historical inspiration. While literature provided her with several fine subjects, the history of Joan of Arc is what most aroused her enthusiasm. She was close to her brother, the duke of Orléans, who was also a patron and collector, and to her sister, Louise, who became the queen of Belgium and with whom she corresponded regularly, thus revealing the “personality of princess Marie, artist, fervent Catholic and admirer of Joan of Arc”. She died of tuberculosis in January 1839 at the age of 26.
