Created in the late 1770s for a reputed and demanding collector, this erotic painting, which might seem rather light at first glance, nevertheless underlines a true ambition. As one of numerous sometimes risqué amorous scenes, eminently representative of the spirit of French society at a time when the Enlightenment was starting to flicker out, it appears to inaugurate a renewal of both Fragonard’s inspiration and French painting at one and the same time.
