Up until the 18th century, the teaching of what are now referred to as “artistic” trades was done in a workshop by a master whose students were actually apprentices. In the second half of the 18th century, Paris was in advance of the other European centers of artistic creation: the first free drawings schools were established, and the term “artist” was adopted in everyday language.
