With Figure out Figure in, Tony Cragg, a major figure on the contemporary art scene, presents a unique set of sculptures and drawings to illustrate his work on the relationship between the inner energy of bodies and their outer envelopes.
Varying in size, shape and nature, the sculptures chosen by the British artist reflect the diversity of his work as a sculptor. The play between the materials, colors and techniques (circumvolutions around an axis, displacements of volume along a lateral plane, accumulation of layers, etc.) is a show of skill using expressive and organic forms to create remarkable presence of emotion.
Most of these artworks were on display at the Musée du Louvre from January 28 to April 25, 2011 in the Cour Marly and Cour Puget, while Versus, a sculpture specially created for the event, was unveiled beneath the Pyramid.
In addition to text by Tony Cragg, this publication features an essay by Catherine Grenier, Deputy Director of the Musée national d'Art moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), and an interview with the artist by Marie-Laure Bernadac, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Musée du Louvre.
