The Egyptians described their writing as “divine words” and believed this knowledge was passed on to man by the scribe of the gods, Thot. The Greeks, on the other hand, referred to these signs as hieroglyphs, which means “sacred carvings”. Examples chosen from the Musée du Louvre collection provide greater insight into the hieroglyphic writing system.
